1.8.17 Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon and is now the richest man in the world. A website called Forbes keeps track of the world’s wealthiest people and Jeff Bezos wealth is 90.6 billion dollars. Jeff Bezos has overtaken Bill Gates and takes 17 percent of the shares from Amazon. In 2016, Bill gates gave 31 billion to charity and now has a about 90.1 billion dollars.

31.7.17 Gold has been found near Paeroa by a mining company. In the Karangahake Gorge, New Talisman Gold Mines has found over 300,000 ounces of high quality gold. The company wants to start extracting small amounts of gold. A group of people wants to stop people from mining in the Karangahake Gorge and to protect the area. They have been protesting since the company got permission for bulk sampling.

27.7.17 This week I am proud of getting gold medals on all of my Mangahigh tasks. I really liked how we did our Mi Plans on paper this week. This week we changed learning teams and then we had to come up with a team name that was relevant to Ngatea. Our team name is Swamp Foxes because it is a Thames Valley team. We are now making a team logo and our plan is to draw a fox with the team name underneath it.

26.7.17 An enormous iceberg has broken away from Antarctica and scientist have been watching the ice break away. The iceberg was estimated to cover 6000 sq km of an area. The research station that was close by, now has to move away. The iceberg weighs about a trillion tonnes! Scientist have been watching this for 10 years and surprisingly broke away  between Monday and Wednesday. It is now important to watch where it goes because it can get in the way of ships’ routes but it depends where it goes.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit near Turkish and Greek tourist places in the Aegean Sea. On a popular Greek holiday island, 2 people died and 100 injured from the earthquake. About 70 people in Turkey’s Bodrum were admitted to hospital. The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake was very shallow and was 10km below the seabed. Turkey is located between the Arabian plate and the Eurasian plate so Turkey is prone to earthquakes.
