20/06/17 10 Facts About New Zealand! These are my 10 facts: Maori Settlement: The first people to arrive to New Zealand were ancestors of Maori. They arrived from Polynesia between 1200 - 1300 AD. As they were exploring the Pacific, they discovered New Zealand and were navigating by ocean currents, stars, and the winds. The First Europeans: Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, was the first European to arrive in New Zealand in 1642. Abel Tasman first called New Zealand Nieuw Zeeland. 127 years later another European came to New Zealand and his name was Captain James Cook. Captain James Cook arrived in 1769 on the first of three voyages. The Treaty Of Waitangi: At Waitangi on 6th of February 1840, William Hobson was New Zealand’s first Governor.
